Department of Pathology, Brigham & Women’s Hospital
Fellowship in Cytopathology

Description: This fellowship provides one full year of advanced training in diagnostic cytology. The cytology service evaluates approximately 55,000 cases per year, of which 7,000 are nongynecologic specimens that include about 1,200 fine needle aspiration biopsies. After a six-month training period, the fellow is expected to assume sign-out responsibilities under supervision. Participation in conferences and teaching of pathology residents is required. The fellow is encouraged to design and complete a research project, and resources include flow cytometry, image analysis, and molecular diagnostics. The laboratory is fully computerized, allowing easy retrieval of specimens by specimen type or diagnosis for teaching, research, or quality control purposes.

Faculty: Edmund S. Cibas, M.D. (Director of Cytology); Felix Brown, M.D.; Eleonora Galvanek, M.D.; David R. Genest, M.D.; Scott R. Granter, M.D.; Jeffrey F. Krane, M.D., Ph.D.; Kenneth R. Lee, M.D.; and Lisa Weinstein, M.D.

Requirements: Preference will be given to candidates who are Board certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology or anatomic and clinical pathology and who have demonstrated an interest in pursuing an academic career in cytopathology. Applicants must be eligible for a Massachusetts medical license.

Stipend: Commensurate with the level of training.
