Supervisor: George F. Murphy, M.D
Duration: 4-6 weeks dedicated rotation in core and also available as 1 year fellowship

Goals and Objectives:

  1. To gain a basic understanding of diagnostic dermatopathology, i.e., to develop a systematic approach to evaluating a skin biopsy, to gain the basic knowledge needed to generate a differential diagnosis for most problems in dermatopathology, and to gain an appreciation for particular problem areas in skin pathology.
  2. To gain an understanding of basic methods routinely used in dermatopa-thology, including particular special stains, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry, and a familiarity with the types of the skin specimens commonly en-countered and their appropriate processing for examination.
  3. To gain an appreciation of the importance of clinicopathologic correla-tion and communication with clinicians concerning diagnosis.

To accomplish these goals, the pathology resident will:

  1. Participate in the routine activities of the Dermatopathology division, including: (i) The daily signout each morning at BWH. Having previously reviewed the cases and formulated a differential diagnosis, the resident will attend the signout with the attending dermatopathologist and the dermatopathology fellow. (ii) The weekly Dermatopathology Teaching Con-ferences, at which the resident will be responsible for discussing cases. (iii) The weekly noon conferences at Children's Hospital,
  2. Learn the basics of "grossing" specimens for histologic examination, i.e., curettage, shave, punch, and excisional specimens, and participate in prepar-ing these specimens. There will be particular attention paid to orientation, margins, etc. The resident will be responsible for obtaining all levels and/or specimen stains.
  3. Review a comprehensive set of teaching cases. Publication of clinical research is encouraged.
