Goal/Objective: To provide anatomic pathology training and teaching in the areas of surgical, cytological, and autopsy pathology, complementing the training program at Brigham and Women's Hospital. A resident typically spends 4 weeks during their first or second year at the West Roxbury Campus of the Boston Area Consolidated Laboratories (BACL) which receives specimens from multiple Veterans Administration Medical Centers and VA clinics in the New England area. After receiving initial training in surgical and autopsy pathology at the Brigham, residents rotate to BACL along with residents from Boston University. Residents are assigned to a surgical, autopsy, and/or cytology rotation and do perform weekend on-call duties for autopsies. In addition to training in general anatomic pathology, the BACL offers subspecialty training in cytopathology, with an active fine needle aspiration (FNA) service, and in Neuropathology and Dermatopathology, with pathologists who are board certified in these subspecialties. The resident participates in department activities including teaching and clinical conferences and is required to participate in the conferences relating to his/her specific rotation. A series of tutorials in the various subspecialty areas of anatomic pathology provide systematic learning by organ system and residents are closely supervised on a day-to-day basis by the senior staff. |
