Back to index

The total experience in surgical pathology and subspecialties is 14-16 months of the two year core. This is accomplished either as integrated/longtitudinal exposure to general surgical pathology and some subspecialities (e.g. breast, gastrointestinal pathology, cardiovascular pathology, pulmonary pathology, genitourinary pathology, soft tissue pathology) and as dedicated subspecialty rotations in others (e.g. women's and perinatal pathology, neuropathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology, pediatric pathology). Other major rotations include cytopathology and autopsy pathology.

A typical first year comprises approximately 4 months of general surgi-cal pathology, 2-3 months of women's and perinatal surgical pathology, 1 month of dermatopathology, 3-4 months of autopsy pathology, 2 weeks elective (usually cytopathology, neuropathology, hematopathology, cardiac/pul- monary), and 2 weeks of molecular diagnostics and independent study. A typical second year com- prises approximately 2-3 months of general surgical pathology, 1 month of women's and perinatal pathology, 1-2 months of autopsy pathology, 3 weeks of independent study, and the remain-der divided among rotations at the Children's Hospital, the Medical Examiner's Office, hematopathology, neuro- pathology, cytopathology, and dermatopathology.
