Hemolysis on SBA
SBA plate showing S. aureus, S. saprophyticus, and S. epidermidis. Arrow points to prominent zone of beta hemolysis surrounding S. aureus isolate.

S. saprophyticus on SBA
S. saprophyticus from urine culture on sheep's blood agar.

Novobiocin sensitivity
S. saprophyticus are resistant to novobiocin (gyrase inhibitor; top hald of SBA plate), a factor which distinguishes them from sensisitve S. epidermidis (bottom half of SBA plate).
